Project 4D - Conversion of Sidestreams from Pretreatment and Enzymatic Hydrolysis Stages to Nanofibrillated Cellulose

PI - Yaman Boluk

Objectives: The goal is to maximize the economic viability of the bioconversion process in the biorefinery by also offering higher value specialty coproducts. The objectives of this research project are: 1) Converting a stream of already pretreated with and without moderately enzymatically treated biomass into NFC by additional high shear mechanical processing; 2) Evaluating the produced nanofibrillated cellulose as a concrete additive to control water holding and bonding characteristics in cement mixtures.
